CAT RESULT 2013

KOLKATA: The IIMs quest to better their diversity quotient seems to be responding with an increase in the number of girls registering and appearing for Common Admission Test ( CAT-2012), a test for entry into the Indian Institutes of Management and other top B-schools, going up. It has gone up from 56,050 in 2011 to 60,876 in 2012.

Ten students have got 100 percentile scores, of which one is an undergraduate science student at Delhi University while other are from the engineering discipline. Eight of these students with the perfect scores come from IITs and five of the ten students are still doing their graduation.

Four girls have scored 99.99 percentile, highest score for this year amongst girls. These four girls, engineering students in their final year are from Karnataka, Orissa, Delhi and UP. In all 255 girls and 1640 boys scored more than 99 percentile.

"CAT 2012 is significant as there is an increase in registrations, first time after moving to a computer based testing platform. The growth in registrations is all encompassing - cutting across the categories and gender. The number of girls registering and appearing for the test showed a considerable uptrend. This development might be seen as a response to the gender diversity in classrooms being sought by most. In addition, candidates from lesser privileged sections of the society are also registering in increasing numbers and are also excelling in the test," says Debashis Chatterjee, director, IIM Kozhikode.

In all a total of 191,642 candidates appeared in the 21-day long testing window from 11 October to 6 November 2012.

It’s faculty vs alumni for director's post in Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: A tug of war between faculty members and alumni has stalled efforts to find a new director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, for the last eight months.

In the last board meeting in December, members of the governing board had stressed that the debate should conclude at some point but the search committee of five members is not reaching unanimity on a panel of three who would succeed Samir Barua, the present director who is on extension. Barua's extension ends on February 7 but there are doubts if the successor would be nominated by then.

This is for the first time in the history of IIM-A that the process of appointment of director has gone beyond the deadline. Strangely, this has happened after full autonomy was given to the board to decide on the basis of recommendations of the search committee.

Sources said the board's chairman A M Naik, who is also the chief of L&T, has been unable to resolve the dispute within the search committee. Apart from Naik, who is the chairman of the search committee, the search committee has three alumni — Rama Bijapurkar, management consultant and visiting faculty; Ashank Desai of Mastek Ltd and Hasit Joshipura of GSK Pharma. The fifth member, Sanjay Lalbhai of Arvind Group, has stopped attending meetings because he is upset with attempts by the three alumni to bulldoze their way.

Bijapurkar & Co. are against the candidature of Prof Ravindra Dholakia, who teaches economics at IIM-A and is a favourite with the faculty. His elder brother Prof Bakul Dholakia was Barua's predecessor as director.

The alumni group had tried to make out a case that it was difficult to find a director under the present salary structure — approximately Rs 30 lakh per annum, including perks and consultancy fee. They were insisting on bringing candidates from US universities who were not willing to come for pittance.

'Amanat' (not her real name) died in Singapore on Saturday morning, three days after her parents flew with her on an air ambulance to a hospital, leaving behind a country praying for a miracle.

Her mother, 45, was reportedly who Amanat communicated with most in the past 13 days that she spent in hospital. Three days after her savage attack, she told her mother that she wanted to live.

Doctors who attended to her mother today say she needs counselling for her trauma. She did not eat anything in the hours she spent at the hospital, sipping some milk instead.

Doctors said she appeared to have not eaten properly for nearly two weeks.

Amanat was a remarkably committed and good student, determined to study medicine. She coached many children in her neighbourhood. She helped bring up her two younger brothers.  She was hoping to get married in February, neighbours said.

They knew of her relationship with a young software engineer, who watched The Life of Pi with her at a South Delhi mall on Sunday night.

They decided to take a bus home. When six drunk men on board including the driver began harassing her, he tried to intervene. They hit first him and then her with an iron rod. Then they took turns raping her before throwing the couple onto the road.

The barbarous contours of the crime incensed India, and students and others held near-daily protests demanding better safety for women and a faster and more effective process of trials for rape cases. Some have been petitioning for the death penalty for extreme cases of sexual assault.

The six men have been arrested, charged with murder and their trial is likely to begin on January 3
