Instructions for online Applications:
1. First Candidates have to scan their Photograph and signature for filling up of Part – II Registration.

4. Candidate should supply all the required details while filling up the online form.
5. The filling of online application contains two parts: Part – I & II.
6. In Part I registration, candidate will have to fill basic information. On submission of details, candidate shall be prompted to check the details and make any correction in the application.
7. Now Press “I agree” button after declaration correction/modification etc. shall not be allowed.
8. Now a page with Registration No. shall be generated. Note down registration number or take the print out of the page.
9. To pay fee in cash, candidate can take printout of Challan generated online after completion of Part I registration. Those who want to pay online through net banking can go directly to part II registration after completion of Part I.
10. Part II registration requires filling of payment details, uploading of photograph and scanned signature.

Sandeep is in love with CAT. Taken the exam for last 20 years

February 14 is the day of love. This article is also about love but of a slightly different kind. Love for CAT as in the Common Admission Test (CAT). How else, would you explain Indore-based Sandeep Manudhane’s fascination for taking CAT every single year since 1993!
Sandeep runs P.T. Education, a coaching centre in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and that partly explains why he is such a CAT-buff. But over the years, the entrance exam has become second nature for this former IIT Delhi student.
Sandeep first took the exam way back in 1992. “I did get a few IIM calls then but did not pursue any. Instead I came down to my hometown Indore and started an education firm from my home garage.”
The education firm that Sandeep started then, is today called P.T. Education.
In the 1990s, Sandeep recalls, CAT was all of 240 questions, with big sets of Synonyms and Antonyms in the Language section. “The RC used to be horrendously tedious and long, and Maths was a mix of logical and routine stuff. ”
Sandeep cracked CAT the first time he took the exam. Over the years, according to the CAT lover, the big change that happened was with the length of the paper. “From 240 questions in 120 minutes to small 60 questions in 140 minutes. For a long period of time, it was 130-150 questions and 120 minutes. A big shock was when the CAT mixed up all the questions - there were no sections at all! Similarly, experiments like 4 sections with time limits etc. have been carried out from time to time. But the biggest change was when CAT became computerised for the first time in 2008.”
Sandeep took CAT as a student (filling the OMR sheets) from 1992 to 2000. Those days, score cards, were not issued . “From 2001 onwards, I started studying the test rather than attempting it. That was the only way I could reproduce (by memory) most of the question-types post-test to help my students."
The other change that Sandeep remembers is that in the earlier days, with no mobiles and internet, neither social media nor prep websites, it used to be just coaching classes and mainstream newspapers to fall back on. And candidates possibly met up at street corners to discuss likely questions.
And how has normalisation changed his take on CAT? “Frankly, I do not understand the specific method they use as they have never disclosed it. I think IIMs (Prometric) need to transparently tell us what forumula or structure they use to "normalise" scores across different testing slots and conditions. Earlier, we were very clear about what possible score a candidate would get as it was a paper based test in one slot.
Some CAT tips by Sandeep
  • Get your concepts right. You won't make it otherwise. Get into the root of each topic.
  • Develop the habit of using options. Always look at the options when you read a question, and before starting to solve it. Options help you understand the nature of the answer.
  • Do a lot of general reading. The language questions cannot be tackled otherwise. Read anything and everything you can, over at least two to three years.
  • Strategising properly is a must. Knowing which questions to attempt and which ones to leave is important. Also attempting the easier ones in the first 'round' is a booster to your confidence.
  • The big game psyche is everything. Many students do well prior to the CAT. But it is on that day, in the middle of the field - on the pitch, that one has to perform.

Prof Gajendra Adil recently took over as head, Shailesh J Mehta School of Management (SJMSoM), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. An academician at heart, Prof Adil worked at Bilkent Universtity, Turkey and City University, Hong Kong before joining SJMSoM in 2000. Speaking exclusively to PaGaLGuY, he talks about his vision for the institute. Excerpts
Will IIT Bombay go the IIT-Madras way and broaden its admission criteria to include non-engineers in its ambit?
I personally feel that this may not make a huge difference. Even if we do this, we may still end up getting a large proportion of engineers. The diversity of other kinds like demographic factors may be equally important. This year we are giving 3 extra marks to women to bring in gender diversity.
In you short stint till now at the institute, have you identified any need gaps?
We need to work on improving our infrastructure and hire more faculties. We have 21 professors now for a batch of 240 students. We want atleast three faculty in each area. We are also looking at newer avenues to get professors from, possibly abroad. We are also looking at processing the faculty applications fast. IITs have begun to encourage that. We can start more courses if we get more faculty members.
As far as the infrastructure is concerned, the new hostel block which is coming up will help the PG students in the campus including our own to get these rooms which are based on a single occupancy. We are also looking at sharing resources with other departments wherein first year students would be able to study the core courses in state of the art modern classrooms.
How do engineering and technology-oriented institutes like IITs or NITIE get the required diversity in classrooms?
Diversity is not only about engineers and non-engineers. It could be work-ex and freshers, work experience in different sectors, rural and urban - these factors can also bring in the required diversity.
Do you think the focus on engineering and technology is also a debilitating factor for all the management departments at IITs which stops them from flourishing as much as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)?
We do not need to go the IIM way nor lose our sleep over size of student population. The best thing for us will be to create a niche by leveraging the fact that we are in an IIT campus alongwith other departments. At the moment, b-schools around the globe are facing challenges due to the economic scenario. We will be better off having a niche strategy for ourselves.
Do you plan to go in for AACSB accreditation?
It is still at a very early consultation stage. This is a long process which takes 5-7 years to get approval so we need to take a call if and when we should go for it.
There were also plans of a course for executives. When will the program be launched?
Discussions are going on and there is no firm commitment at this point of time.
Have you introduced any new initiatives in the admission process this year?
Not in any major way, apart from fine tuning some processes. We dropped GD and introduced written analysis and adjusted weightages of different factors. It is available on our website for applicants.
Do you support the case for a single management test like GMAT for aspirants?
I feel what we have at present is good as it offers flexibility to the applicants and colleges.
What stops b-schools from undertaking path-breaking research in India?
Lack of quality faculty and more importantly lack of emphasis for research in most b-schools.
What is the difference in the students that have been coming in with CAT scores as opposed to JMET which existed earlier?
It has been just a year. We have to wait for a couple of years to conclude anything on this.
As an educator, where does the biggest challenge lie for faculty in India?
I guess how to engage and motivate students to study is a challenge. In established b-schools, students assume assured placements while smaller b-schools lack quality students. Both the scenarios are a challenge for the faculty members.
What is your vision for SJMSoM?
SJMSoM should be known for quality students graduating from our Master of Management and PhD programs.
