'Amanat' (not her real name) died in Singapore on Saturday morning, three days after her parents flew with her on an air ambulance to a hospital, leaving behind a country praying for a miracle.

Her mother, 45, was reportedly who Amanat communicated with most in the past 13 days that she spent in hospital. Three days after her savage attack, she told her mother that she wanted to live.

Doctors who attended to her mother today say she needs counselling for her trauma. She did not eat anything in the hours she spent at the hospital, sipping some milk instead.

Doctors said she appeared to have not eaten properly for nearly two weeks.

Amanat was a remarkably committed and good student, determined to study medicine. She coached many children in her neighbourhood. She helped bring up her two younger brothers.  She was hoping to get married in February, neighbours said.

They knew of her relationship with a young software engineer, who watched The Life of Pi with her at a South Delhi mall on Sunday night.

They decided to take a bus home. When six drunk men on board including the driver began harassing her, he tried to intervene. They hit first him and then her with an iron rod. Then they took turns raping her before throwing the couple onto the road.

The barbarous contours of the crime incensed India, and students and others held near-daily protests demanding better safety for women and a faster and more effective process of trials for rape cases. Some have been petitioning for the death penalty for extreme cases of sexual assault.

The six men have been arrested, charged with murder and their trial is likely to begin on January 3

Apple Falls to Four-Year Low in Online Customer Satisfaction Survey



The post-Ron Johnson era did not begin well for Apple. Earlier this year, the company ousted Johnson’s successor, John Browett, as head of its retail operations following a series of rare and embarrassing cockups. Initially, those missteps appeared to be largely operational, fomenting unrest and criticism among Apple Store employees: Freezing hiring and other moves intended to scale back payroll expenses, deferring facilities repairs. But new research from analytics firm ForeSee suggest that Browett’s brief tenure at Apple may have had some negative effects on the customer-facing side of its retail operations as well. Could that really be the case?

According to ForeSee’s annual Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction Index, compiled from 24,000 customer surveys gathered between Thanksgiving and Christmas, customer satisfaction with Apple’s online store slipped three points this year, falling to 80 from the 83 points it captured in 2011. That decline was among the biggest Foresee charted this year, and it left Apple with its lowest score on the firm’s consumer satisfaction index in four years. (Ironically, J.C. Penney — where Ron Johnson is now CEO — was another of Foresee’s big decliners this holiday season).



Why the sudden drop? There’s no simple explanation, though it’s easy enough to lay the blame on Browett. Following his tenure, the company not only forfeited its second place ranking on the Foresee index, but fell out of the top five as well. Sure, the decline was measured after his ouster, but not so far after that he doesn’t bear some responsibility. That said, there are obviously other factors at work here as well.

ForeSee’s surveys measure four elements of customer satisfaction: Merchandise appeal, competitiveness of price, Web site functionality and Web site content. Clearly, not all of those elements were under Browett’s control. And it’s not evident where, exactly, Apple suffered declines. ForeSee says only that “Web site functionality” is a top priority for improvement at Apple. It’s worth noting, though, that that functionality isn’t so different from what it was last year, when Apple placed in ForeSee’s top five.

Keeping that in mind — and our perceptions of price and product appeal, as well — Apple’s diminished customer satisfaction score seems more the result of consumer caprice than anything else. Have the company’s prices and the appeal of its products really changed that drastically from 2011 when it scored higher on the ForeSee index?

FCI 2012 RESULT OUT

The government succeeded in moving ahead with its economic reforms with the Lok Sabha on Tuesday approving the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill.

The Bill is expected to pave way for more foreign investments into the sector by increasing the shareholders' voting rights.

However, in its effort to enlist the Opposition's support, the government was forced to drop the controversial clause in the Bill that would have allowed banks to trade in the commodity futures market.

"The Bill is too important for me to pass. Therefore, I am bringing the Bill, dropping the controversial clauses," Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said while winding up the discussion on the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2011.

Here are some aspects of the Bill -

>> Banking Bill will increase shareholders' voting rights from 10 per cent to 26 per cent in private sector banks, making investment attractive to foreign players

>> Legislation clears the way for more corporate houses to run banks by enabling the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI) to issue new bank licences

>> Raising of the voting cap will have a positive impact in attracting funds as it will help foreign investors to have more say in banks

>> Government dropped a clause allowing banks to trade commodities futures amid fears it could lead to risky, speculative trading

>> Bill will give the RBI greater regulatory oversight over local banks & the ability to overrule boards when the banks are facing financial difficulties

>> Bill also enables the government to raise voting rights in state banks such as the State Bank of India to 10 per cent from the current one per cent, acceding partially to foreign investors' demands to have more say in Indian banking

>> Bill will allow foreign banks to convert their Indian operations into local subsidiaries or transfer shareholding to a holding company of the bank without paying stamp duty
